Few skills in life are as important as reading comprehension. Not only is it important academically, it’s a key element of human development. In Nicaragua, access to reading material is very limited. There are really no public libraries and books are very expensive. Even in the 37 public schools that we serve, there are virtually no books, except for some shared textbooks. We organize school libraries and reading clubs for elementary students, high school students and teachers. Each year, we distribute books to all the schools that we serve and we also invest in creating school libraries.

Several months ago, our dear fiend Isabel Pollen decided to run a marathon to raise money for books and reading. So, we decided to expand on her idea and organize a Run for Readers, with a goal of raising $25,000 for books and reading. Our goal is to distribute 3,000 books and build two school libraries in 2024.

Isabel will be running her marathon in London, but we invite runners, walkers and hikers of any age and experience level to participate from anywhere on the globe. Anyone is welcome to sign up and you are welcome to set your own distance and goals. When you sign up, you can set up your own fundraising page, to invite friends and family to support your efforts.

We host events during the year to keep our donors and supporters informed and connected. Attending an event is a great way to learn more about our work in Nicaragua and to meet with board members, staff and volunteers. Our biggest event is our annual Night for Nicaragua dinner!

During this event you will:

  • Hear powerful stories of what God is accomplishing in Nicaragua directly from our field staff
  • Enjoy an amazing meal, great drinks, and top notch entertainment
  • Get an up-close view of the lives changed by the generous support of the Rayo de Sol family
  • Support the work of Nicaraguan artisans whose incredible handmade products are available for purchase

Stay tuned to hear about upcoming events, and follow us on Facebook to make sure you’re in the loop!
