Most rural communities in Matagalpa have very limited access to water, making health and hygiene conditions precarious. We work with community leaders to identify water projects that will improve health and hygiene for rural families.
Each community has very different conditions, and water solutions need to be designed accordingly. Our water projects have included: extension of public water lines; maintenance and repair of community wells; catchment systems for mountain springs; and the design and implementation of a rain harvesting system.
The rain harvesting system has been quite successful and is easily replicable. Storing and purifying rain water is a viable solution for communities with severe water shortages. The systems capture rainwater from the roof and store it in a sanitary tank for household use. A filter is also included in the system for purifying water for consumption.
